چکیده

Aggregation behaviour of cefprozil monohydrate (C18H19N3O5S.H2O), an antibiotic, has been studied in presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Critical micelle concentration (CMC) of drug is determined to be 0.34 mM and is observed to decrease significantly at SDS < 2 mM. Above this concentration increase is less prominent and remains almost constant. However a regular decrease in CMC of Cepprozil monohydrate have been observed by increasing the concentration of CTAB. Variation in CMC values of SDS and CTAB have been studied at the premicellar region of Cefprozil monohydrate. A sharp decrease in the CMC of SDS and CTAB have been observed at low concentration of drug but at higher concentration variation in CMC of detergents is not significant. Effect of temperature on micellization of SDS and CTAB have been studied at 30o, 40o and 50oC with and without additive. Physicochemical parameters have been calculated utilizing pseudophaze model.

Dissolution Study of Some Antibiotics

Dissolution behaviour of pure cefprozil monohydrate (CM) and cefuroxime axetile (CA) and their marketed tablets have been studied in aqueous as well as micellar media. Dissolution of cefprozil monohydrate is significantly assisted in presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). But, SDS and CTAB behave differently in accelerating the dissolution tendency ...

Comparative efficacy and safety of cefprozil (BMY-28100) and cefaclor in the treatment of acute group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis.

Cefprozil (BMY-28100) is a semisynthetic cephalosporin with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and prolonged serum elimination half-life allowing for once-a-day oral administration. In vitro, cefprozil demonstrates excellent activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. Cefprozil (500 mg once daily) was compared to cefaclor...

Phase I study of multiple-dose cefprozil and comparison with cefaclor.

The objectives of this study were to assess the safety and tolerance of cefprozil, to characterize the pharmacokinetics of cefprozil after administration of multiple doses of the drug, and to compare these pharmacokinetic parameters with those obtained with cefaclor. The volunteers received 28 doses of 250, 500, or 1,000 mg of cefprozil or 500 mg of cefaclor every 8 h for 10 days. Serial blood ...

Cefprozil versus penicillin V in treatment of streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis.

In a randomized multicenter study, the efficacy and safety of cefprozil were compared with those of penicillin in the treatment of group A streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis in children. Of the 409 patients enrolled, 323 were evaluable for their clinical and bacteriological responses; of these 323 children, 172 received cefprozil and 151 received penicillin V. The clinical responses in patients ...

Inability of cephalothin testing to predict cefprozil susceptibility.

The 30-micrograms cefprozil disk and the cephalosporin class (30-micrograms cephalothin) disk were compared for their abilities to predict cefprozil susceptibility by agar disk diffusion testing. High error (5.02% major and 14.11% minor) rates were encountered with the cephalothin disk and were most frequently observed for Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis. The cefprozil disks resulted...
